Is the Beyond Burger healthier?
Is the Beyond burger the healthier option? I'll tell you a story and let you decide. 2 years back a gentleman I buy fish from (delivers it to the house) offered me a box of Beyond burgers. This was way before they were publicly available and he was so excited to have exclusivity. We eat kosher at home so veggie food options are important. Veggie's better for you right?!!? I committed to a huge box (40 patties) and was so excited to make them. The family loved them.
2 years later I still had the box in my freezer. Why? Because I had a new skillset and I had read the food label. Omg. 18g of fat for a single patty? HOLY Friggin MOLY. I had been duped by all the fancy marketing and packaging. The front of the box boasted the 20g of protein. Who would buy this patty if they knew there was almost as much fat? As a 40+ year old 5"1 woman, if I was to eat this burger it would be about 70% of my fat allowance for the day.
We buy all kinds of products because of what we read on the front of the package without hesitation. Vegan, Gluten free, High protein, low fat, low carb and on and on. The minute something is processed you should ALWAYS look at the label and read the ingredients. Someone in pretty chair somewhere on a fancy computer decided they were going to use keywords to persuade you to a buy a product hoping you wouldn't look at the back.
The best is that all along President's choice was making a veggie Portabello burger that I rarely bought because I assumed that the cheese would make it high in fat. Was I wrong... Only 5 grams of fat for an 18g of protein patty. Now that's what I'm talking about. I'll take 2!!! I reco you try it because it's really yummy. I also reco you read the back of the beyond burger package the next time you see one.
